One of the big holidays in February is Valentine’s day, which brings with it icons of hearts and cupids, a day meant to honor love and our sweetheart.

Here at Salt Lake Dental, we want to show you we love our patients. In fact, we love Salt Lake City, we love dentistry, we love our staff. We’re just full of love!

Many patients love us in return, and we’re grateful. We love when you share your feelings about Salt Lake Dental, just like some of our patients did on our website.

If you have shared the love, and referred a patient to our practice, you’ll receive a thank you gift from us, as well as an entry into our giveaway, more details coming soon.

Many people bring up the subject of whitening at their dental appointment, and we’re happy to share our wisdom and advice.

One of the best options for most patients is to whiten with custom molded whitening trays you wear at home. Plenty of our patients are a part of our free whitening for life program. As part of this program, you’ll receive custom trays and 2 tubes of whitening gel to get started. Then, each time you come in for your cleaning and checkup, we’ll provide you with more bleaching product to maintain and update your smile.

Ask us about our free whitening program as well as in-office whitening and other cosmetic treatment and we’ll see what we can do for you!

This cold weather feels a little bit unrelenting. After the new year starts, and the holidays die down, winter seems so long. These single digit temperatures, and sometimes even the teens really can do a number on you.

Maybe as you’re walking outdoors, you even notice how the cold feels as you breathe in. Cold sensitivity is a big issue for a lot of patients, and it’s something you should mention to us at your next appointment.

Our doctors and hygienists may be able to recommend a sensitivity toothpaste for you, or might look at your teeth and your brushing techniques and make other suggestions for you based on this information.

The American Dental Association has a site where you can check on sensitivity and other dental symptoms. Feel free to set up an appointment or give us a call if the cold, or anything else, is making your teeth feel too sensitive.

Oh boy, we all survived the holiday season and the end of the world!

So, where does that leave us? In January of course, getting 2013 off to a fantastic start.

If you have a new insurance plan, or new benefits like flex spending or HSA dollars, feel free to call us about how you can utilize it in our office. We’re happy to help with any questions you might have.

This is always a good time to get into new routines, to work on those pesky resolutions. What are yours? Planning on losing weight or eating better? Those resolutions will contribute to your future dental health. Maybe you’ve decided to stay away from those big ones. That’s OK! Something simple like flossing every day is a good resolution to make too! Habits only take a few weeks to become a part of your every day schedule, and at that point, you’ll know you’re doing something great for yourself!

Perhaps this year, you want to take some time for you, to take care of yourself. Talk to us about your cosmetic concerns, like whitening or orthodontics. We can give you more details about the implant process or veneers, if that’s the kind of thing you want to make your smile gorgeous.

Let us help you make 2013 a great year!

It’s been a busy year for us here at Salt Lake Dental. 2012 was the year we made a name for ourselves here in Salt Lake City, and we feel we’re ending this year on a high note!

Lots of changes came, but that happens to us all. We welcomed new staff and got settled into our office routines. We met lots of new patients and invited them into our practice with paraffin dipped hands and clean teeth. We took care of many emergencies, getting them out of pain and into better dental health.

We made ourselves visible in the Salt Lake community through a number of efforts. We paired with Operation Gratitude for our Halloween candy event. We worked with West Valley Frito Lay and the Wounded Warrior project as well, during the Utah State Fair. We volunteered at a Movember event, raising money for prostate and testicular cancers. Perhaps we even visited you at your local employer, inviting you to join our practice.

We’re proud of the work we’ve done in 2012, and can’t wait to top it in 2013. Come into our practice next year and help us do just that!

Insurances are a funny thing. You both love them and curse them, I bet, just like our office does at time.

As November winds down and the year-end fast approaches, we want to remind you to take advantage of your dental insurance.

Sure, there’s still time left, but book your appointment now before the craziness of the holidays sets in and it slips your mind. If you’re looking for one of the prime spots, like 7 am or 4 pm, there’s not very many left available.

Of course, check with us or your insurance company, since plans vary, but usually insurance covers preventive care, including 100% of cleanings / exams. If you haven’t had a cleaning yet this year, or it’s been 6 months since we’ve seen you for one, please schedule one now.

You also have a maximum benefit amount, and if you have treatment remaining, you may choose to do it with these 2012 funds, since they do NOT roll over. If you don’t use them, that money is lost and 2013 starts a new year with new maximums and deductibles.

Call us today to go over your insurance and schedule and appointment! 801-487-0760

While Halloween is still a few days away, we know this weekend will be full of events. Harvest festivals, corn mazes, haunted houses, trunk or treat events, parties and more. Thankfully, Salt Lake City, Utah has a LOT of fall activities!

We want you to know that there are both good and bad candy options, both of which may end up in your child’s trick-or-treat bags.

Of course, here at Salt Lake Dental, our dentists and hygienists aren’t advocates of kids stuffing themselves with tons of sugary snacks. However, we recognize that candy is an important part of the traditions that come along with Halloween. We want to help you figure out which candies are better for their teeth and which ones increase the risk of cavities.

Worst offenders:

Chewy or sticky sweets, such as gummy candies, taffy, caramel. and even dried fruit can be difficult to remove from teeth. These candies are a cause for decay, especially when they get stuck in or between the teeth, where they spend prolonged time. If your child has braces, this can be an even bigger problem.

Sour candy is very acidic and can cause damage to tooth enamel. We recommend patients wait 30 minutes to brush their teeth after consuming sour or acidic candies.

Sugary snacks, like cookies, cake, brownies, and candy corn all contain high amounts of sugar, which can cause tooth decay.

We don’t really think there is a best, but sugar-free lollipops and candies stimulate saliva, which can help prevent dry mouth, which can accelerate decay. Sugar-free gum can actually prevent cavities as it not only dislodges particles from between the teeth but also helps with saliva. Chocolate is a good treat, because it’s quickly eaten and melted away, rather than spending a lot of time in your child’s mouth.

We encourage you eat a full dinner before you go out Halloween night. Make the candy a treat, not the main course.  Ensure Halloween night ends with a good tooth brushing, along with flossing, and depending on your child’s age, a fluoride mouth rinse.

Save a couple of pieces for your child to enjoy, and bring the rest to our Halloween Sweet Swap!

Halloween is less than two weeks away! Are you ready? Do you have your costume picked out? Is your front door decorated with cobwebs? (Hey, real ones count too!)

We’re debating over our costumes, making last-minute changes, just like your kids will. We’re practicing our cackles and our pumpkin carving skills.

We’re counting out crisp dollar bills to pay out to kids in exchange for their extra Halloween candy, and preparing boxes to ship that candy to our troops overseas.

Are you coming by? We’d love to see you and your family at our Halloween candy buy back on November 1st from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm in our office.

RSVP on Facebook and invite your friends!
